Practice Schedules
Practice schedules will not appear on the web site. Please
consult your coach.
Practice schedules are subject to two dynamics which make it
difficult, if not impossible, to keep current during the season. We do not
want you consulting the web if a change has occurred that we do not know to
post.
Schools may cancel practices on short notice in favor of school
functions which take priority. On occasion the schools forget to notify
DYA until the day of the practice.
Coaches may trade practices with each other as conflicts in their
own work schedules prevent them from attending the assigned practice.
Game Schedules
Game schedules are much more stable and will be posted on the web
site.
Of the approximately 135 teams, several will be coached by a
parent working with two teams in different leagues. Our concern is for
that parent not having to choose between which team's game to attend. We
work very hard to make sure that no conflicts occur for that parent, and he/she
will have ample travel time to be at both games for his/her and your students.
School tryouts for grades 7-12 occur in late October, early
November. Many of the students signed up for DYA basketball will make
school teams. When they do, they are not allowed by school rules to
participate in DYA basketball. Many of the students who signed up for DYA
and then make a school team have parents who were going to coach. Three
things occur:
Coaches will be lost when their children make teams and
replacement coaches must be sought out.
The number of players changes and the number of teams may change
from what was anticipated in sign ups.
Additional players may sign up after tryouts.
Some of the parents who will coach in grades 7-12 will also be
coaching in multiple leagues. We want to help them for stepping up and do
not want conflicts. Thus, rather than paint ourselves into a corner by
releasing schedules for grades 3-6 at the coaches meetings, they will be held
until the coaches are determined for grades 7-12. This could all be
avoided if more parents stepped up so certain parents would not have to take
multiple teams.
To help all parents plan their weekends in the meantime the
schedules for grades 3-6 will be posted with dates and times only. We will
post those as the contracts are finalized with the individual schools.
Thank you for your understanding.
Oh yes, for the record, in 2007-2008 there were 23 parents
coaching 47 of the 148 recreation teams. Those 23 parents are involved in
444 of the 753 games for recreation basketball. If you think this is a
huge undertaking you are correct.
Game Schedules
Tournament Schedules
Tournament schedules for grades 6-12 will be posted as soon as we
know how many teams will be participating in grades 7-12. This will occur
after the results of school tryouts.
