Requests For a variety of reasons and experiences, DYA programs do not honor requests. This applies to the volleyball program as well. The short version is with 300 participants, it simply does not work. The ONLY EXCEPTIONS are as follows: The head coach in each sport is allowed to name one and only one assistant. The children of the coaches of that team are paired together. So if you absolutely must be with someone, become a head coach. It's fun, but does require a little work. Brothers and sisters who are playing in the same division of a program, i.e. same league, are placed on the same team, whether by placement or player draft, whichever is the procedure for placing players in a particular division/league.
There will be a player draft to place players on teams in grades 5-12. That draft will take place at the August meeting of coaches. Coaches select players for their teams one at a time. For grades 3 and 4 teams will be assigned by lot. In randomly assigning players to teams, there are a few overriding parameters. First the coaches are assigned to teams. Then the boys were distributed so no boy was the only one on his team. Then the remainder of the players are distributed randomly, but with a bias that grades are distributed evenly by team and that a player is assigned to a team with another player from his/her school, if possible. Other than these conditions the assignments are purely random.
Enrollment closes on May 31st. Based on enrollment at that time, the number of teams will be set. It is preferred to have an even number of teams, since in a short season, "bye" weeks are undesirable. Nine players are desired on each full team, so that there would be enough players each week (remember, some teams would have only 8 if the league was not full) and everyone would have a chance to participate. Six players play at one time with a player rotating into the game at each change of service. Once the number of teams is set, any openings will be filled on a space available basis. For example, if some teams do not have a full complement of players, late enrollees will be added until league is filled, if enrolled prior to the coaches' meeting, or may be added to an individual team with an opening, if signed up after the coaches' meeting. On May 31st the enrollment process was shut down and the number of teams was determined, allowing for some late sign-ups. Contracting of school facilities had to be completed before school closed for the summer, because the program starts when schools open in the fall. |
