DYA volunteer jobs

The COACH is the head coach for the team. He or she is responsible for coaching, teaching, and instructing the team members during games and practices. He or she is responsible for maintaining an acceptable level of behavior and good sportsmanship of the players and their parents. There are approximately 10 games and 14 practices over a four-month period for basketball. There are approximately 6 practices and 14-18 games for baseball, softball, and tee-ball over a 3½ month period. The coach may also be provided money to pay officials and must distribute those funds accordingly. The coach communicates practice or game schedule changes to players, but may use another parent volunteer to notify team members. The coach will select one other volunteer to be his or her assistant coach.

The ASSISTANT COACH will assume the duties of the coach in the coach's absence. He or she will also assist in coaching duties at practices and games.

The TEAM’S VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR assists the coach by scheduling parent volunteers to perform various tasks required of the team, e.g. work in the concession stand, set up field prior to game, pick up bases after the game, help players police the area for trash after a game, etc.

The UMPIRE’S BUDDY is a non-coaching adult who helps control unruly fans on his or her own team’s sideline.

REFEREE or UMPIRE - Basketball leagues for grades 7-12, baseball leagues for grades 8-12, and all travel leagues use adult and certified officials.  Basketball officials are usually assigned two to three consecutive games per Saturday.  Baseball umpires are usually assigned one or two games per weeknight and one or two games on weekends.

The LEAGUE COMMISSIONER selects the coaches from among the applications and runs the league meeting and player draft or draw. The league commissioner answers phone calls to his or her InPhoNet voice mailbox regarding league issues. The league commissioner supervises the coaches in the league and is the first line for handling conduct and sportsmanship infractions. He or she makes necessary phone calls or holds meetings to address problem areas within the league. Total time varies, but this is a big and important job.

Persons who volunteer to HELP TAKE IN EQUIPMENT come to the office at season’s end on designated evenings to receive baseball, softball, and tee-ball equipment as it is turned in. Volunteers inspect, inventory, and re-bag equipment for the next season. Usually about two hours in the evening.

The EVALUATOR at TRAVEL BASEBALL TEAM TRYOUTS will assist the Director of Travel Baseball in the evaluation and selection of travel baseball teams. Evaluators are independent and do not evaluate the players in their child's age group or team. This usually requires two to three hours for three nights each.

The EVALUATOR at TRAVEL BASKETBALL TEAM TRYOUTS will assist the Director of Travel Basketball in the evaluation and selection of travel basketball teams. Evaluators are independent and do not evaluate the players in their child's grade group or team. This usually requires two to three hours for three nights each.

The FIELD INSPECTOR assists the Director of Baseball, the Director of Softball, and the DYA Athletic Director in evaluating baseball, softball, and tee-ball field conditions at elementary schools following rainy weather.   These volunteers need to be available to check one specific school's fields by 3:00 pm each weekday and by 7:00 am on Saturdays in the event that a report of field conditions is not received from the schools.   Training on what constitutes a "rained out" condition will be provided to all volunteers performing this job.  This position is an essential part of the notification process provided by the DYA Rain-Line and the website's Weather Line.

Members of the BOARD OF DIRECTORS are elected each January. Officers include President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Other board members include directors of each program and directors at large. The board reviews all programs and sets policy and procedures for all programs. Meetings are held at 8:30 p.m. for approximately two hours each the third Thursday each month.

Persons who volunteer to STAFF TABLES at SIGN-UPS work weekend mornings or afternoons of sign-ups. Either September for basketball or January/February for baseball, softball, tee-ball.

Persons who volunteer to HELP with OFFICE PAPERWORK come to the DYA office in the mornings, when called, to help with various paperwork associated with the application and league meeting process. Volunteers also attend league meetings to help with paperwork associated with the team selection process.

Persons who volunteer to HELP MAIL NEWSLETTERS come to the office and attach mailing labels to newsletters. Time varies, but is usually less than one hour.

Persons who volunteer to MAKE PHONE CALLS TO SCHEDULE VOLUNTEERS make phone calls to schedule other persons who have volunteered to let them know when they are needed. Time varies depending on availability and responses from volunteers. Usually lining up 5 to 10 volunteers at a time.

The SCOREKEEPER keeps the book at the game. Scorekeeping duties include keeping track of players participating, personal fouls, official score, etc.

The TIMER keeps the game clock and the score on the gym's scoreboard for basketball games.
