Middle School and High School Basketball Leagues
Grades 7 through 12

League meetings for DYA recreation leagues for boys and girls in the seventh through twelfth grades begin after school tryouts.

School tryouts are usually held during the first two weeks in November.  Some years tryouts begin the last week of October.

Ohio High School Athletic Association rules governing member middle school and high school teams prohibit members of school teams from participating in other basketball programs, such as the DYA recreation program, during the school season.

DYA games begin the first weekend in December, which means a tight schedule for assembling the program following school tryouts.  Here are just a few things that must be done during the interval between the end of tryouts and the start of the DYA season:

Contact all four Dublin middle schools and three Dublin high schools to get the rosters for boys and girls teams - 34 team rosters in total.  With the cooperation of the school coaches and athletic directors, this usually happens within a day or two after posting.
Identify those who made school teams, remove them from the DYA rosters, refund their application fees, and create a roster of eligible players for the player draft.
Make up schedules of practices and games for the number of teams participating.   Final number of teams depends on how many players make school teams and have also signed up for DYA recreation programs.  Reconstruct schedules as necessary.
Identify and select coaches from the parent volunteers of remaining players on the roster.  Many parents volunteer to coach, but then withdraw when their child makes a school team.  This is an understandable part of the process, but complicates identifying and recruiting of coaches.
Conduct a coaches meeting to distribute rules, practice schedules, game schedules, money to pay officials, basketballs, etc.  Conduct the player selection draft.  Notify players of first practice and game.

This is a lot to accomplish in a few days.

Sign-ups are held in mid-September to get an idea of approximately how much gym space to rent for weekend games and to begin scheduling officials, who are in rare supply if the leagues wait until November or December to schedule them.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
